No Free Speech at Any Price
So maybe I will blog more in '04,
because it's looking like it's going to be just that outrageous
of a year. The latest thing to get my panties in a twist: CBS
stating it won't show "advocacy ads" during the Super Bowl,
thereby dumping the not-at-all angry or Bush-bashing MoveOn
ad and a funny ad
from PETA to discourage meat-eating.
But wait, isn't suggesting you buy
a particular brand of mouthwash or car (or any mouthwash
or car at all) clearly a form of advocacy. That's what an
advertisement is. Sure, some ad exec's try to con us into thinking
that their goal is merely to "inform the public" of the choices
that are available. So isn't that what PETA and MoveOn are doing
- informing the public. And they were willing to show theTruth.com's
anti-smoking commercials during a Super Bowl. Apparently free speech
isn't even for sale to the highest bidder, it's only for sale to
the highest bidder that corporate media doesn't disagree with.
If I watched commercial television,
I'd stop watching CBS. If you watch commercial television, please
stop it now! This has been a public service announcement from
your friendly neighborhood apegrrl. Views expressed are not necessarily
those of Cruzio or rattlebrain.com
