About the artist

Elaine's face I was first exposed to clay in 1979 as a high school student. The romance had begun. After obtaining a degree in mathematics in 1984 I programmed computers for the next six years. All the while I could not keep my hands out of the clay. I took the summer of 1988 off to do a 3500 mile solo bicycle tour of Canada and the United States. It was the classic trip to "find myself." Besides having the time of my life it did occur to me that if I could make it across the U.S. on a bike I could possibly do what really made me happy for awhile. In 1990 I gave myself the gift of a year to work full time in clay. That year has turned into many now and I am a different person. My life has become as multifaceted and richly diverse as my creations. I've progressed through many different styles and techniques in my journey. I've taught classes and workshops about my discoveries since 1989. My students are my best teachers and they provide me with endless new material to continue to reach for the element of surprise in my own work. I'm always watching for a result I've never seen before. With this mesmerizing versatile medium I'm certain that I will never stop finding new ways to explore.
