Slab Built Functional Stoneware

pitcher To create my stoneware I treat the clay as if it were fabric used in a quilt. Each piece begins as soft slabs of colored clays which are torn apart and textured. My texture tools range from clay stamps which I create to imported Indian wood cuts to everyday objects like bits of wood, buttons, screwdrivers, a meat tenderizer, and more. The textured pieces are assembled back into a single sheet of clay like a puzzle. This sheet is then used to create a unique geometric shape. The result is a boldly refined form made playful by its richly dressed up surface. The addition of glazes into the textures enlivens the piece with color and contrast. All pieces are high fired to 2300 degrees for durability and water tightness. My one-of-a-kind pieces take ordinary functionality and make it extraordinary.

Raku Mixed Media Wall Art

plate1 Fabric and hand made paper are the inspirations for my wall pieces. I roll out a soft slab, texture it, rip it, even cut holes in it to add an extra dimension. I then drape the slab over a plaster dome to achieve its shield-like shape. The piece is given its dramatic glaze effects by firing it using the ancient Japanese process known as Raku. The piece is pulled out red hot at 1800 degrees and is smoked in a barrel full of combustible materials. As soon as the barrel has cooled I eagerly peek to see what magically one-of-a-kind results the fire has allowed me. Finally I enhance the contrast of color and texture by embellishing the piece with imported silk weavings, handmade paper, twigs, wire and more.
