NEW COLLEGE IRISH STUDIES PROGRAM IS SPONSORING

IMAGES OF THE NORTH:

UNDER A WATCHFUL EYE

AN ONGOING PHOTO PROJECT by Molly Malloy

The images of a police state and the reminders of how far we still have to go in the peace process in the North of Ireland comprise the bulk of my photos. The pictures represent the constant state of surveillance endured by the people who live in Belfast. Despite the Good Friday Agreement the people in the North are still living in a highly controlled, destructive atmosphere. The discrimination and threats of violence are still a part of every day life. Through my pictures of the RUC stations, the political murals and the funerals, I try to starkly outline the trials that these people must endure.

I am a freelance photographer and writer currently chronicling life in the North. I have been taking photographs for over 13 years and plan to continue documenting the struggle in the North to bring it to the public's attention. I am the Program Coordinator for the Irish Studies Program at New College of California and live with my daughter in the Bay Area. I am actively involved in several organisations devoted to securing peace in the North.

"Molly Malloy's photographs straddle the worlds of art and journalism. She applies her knowledge and skills as a student of Irish history and politics to the careful documentation of what she sees and what it means. But these documentary photographs are taken with the artist's eye for capturing the essence and emotion of a scene, be it a funeral procession or children at play." --M. Merrill, Anthropologist and Writer, Duke University

"These photos were taken by someone with a fine, intuitive eye as well as a clear and passionate intelligence.Visual art.Eloquent journalism. It was clear at the closing of the exhibit that those who came to view her work were very moved by both the story told and the artist, herself."--Diane Austin Photo Editor and Researcher

"...Malloy captures the gray... atmosphere with little fanfare... It is a mood, these photos seem to declare, that has become interminable." -- Julia Chiapella, Santa Cruz Sentinel, "Art Beat"
